Art Rotterdam presents: Driessens & Verstappen
On show, by featured artists Driessens & Verstappen: E-volved Cultures; A software presentation by which an artificial landscape is being created in ‘real time’. Virtual organisms, that leave behind visible traces in interaction with their surroundings, together generate a dynamic pixel fabric. Bright, abstract animations bring about associations with geological processes, cloud formations, mould cultures, organ tissue or satellite photos. But in the end they withdraw themselves from any fixed identifications.

Rotterdam Plaza | Piet Zwart Institute
Location: Karel Doormanhof 45
Time: Saturday 11 February: 7pm - 10pm
www.pzwart.wdka.nl
Rotterdam Plaza is the new projectspace of the Piet Zwart Institute for Postgraduate studies, located on the square at Karel Doormanhof. Referring to its original meaning as ‘field’ in an open urban public space, the plaza is the centre of community life. This is the place where in its -traditional setting, the military would parade, where during crisis or fiesta crowds would gather, and where the daily market would take place. Today, the word ‘plaza’ is also often used for ‘shopping mall’ as point of daily attention. Rotterdam Plaza functions as a platform of exchange of the public and closed activities of the Piet Zwart community. In the spirit of the plaza, Rotterdam Plaza will house an event during the Art Rotterdam fair on Saturday evening.

The program consists of the films dial H-I-S-T-O-R-Y (1997) and Besmette Stad (1993), two characteristic films of his portfolio. The highly acclaimed dial HISTORY compiles images of airplane hijackings in the mix with commercials and political statements. It premiered for a big public at Documenta X in 1997 and immediately brought worldfame to Grimonprez (Volkskrant). Besmette Stad pictures national and international artists of different disciplines exploring the city of Brussels as a landscape, a working place, and maybe a ‘state of mind’.
The screening picks up on the extensive retrospective at museum SMAK in Gent. Parallel to this filmscreening Flatland Gallery (booth 59) will present the recent film I MAY HAVE FOREVER LOST MY UMBRELLA by Johan Grimonprez at Art Rotterdam.
